Can You See the Virgin Mary In this Sprawl?

Sprawl

My new favorite blog, The Evangelical Atheist (thanks Stefan!), has a long, detailed post about a Catholic "planned community" (god I love that euphemism for controlled bigotry & homogeneity) bankrolled by pizza tycoon Tom Monaghan, founder of Domino’s Pizza. (hmm... Irish Catholic - that explains why the pizza is so terrible) Said the pizza man:

“We’re going to control all the commercial real estate, so there’s not going to be any pornography sold in this town. We’re controlling the cable system. The pharmacies are not going to be able to sell condoms or dispense contraceptives.'’

UglychurchLove that Catholic aversion to birth control. gah.  No porn, no contraceptives... but no dearth of mediocre pizza.  They also have failed delusions of grandeur about building a catholic megachurch. (ugh, no way is god going to find his way to that ugly bastard.  Giant pope hat is a bit Disney, even for Florida, no?

That's exactly the quote that struck me too. We are going to CONTROL ________. That's what we need a place in the US with fewer freedoms. I guess it will make it easier for folks who don't want to deal with the pesky free will thing.

If people don't like the concept of the Catholic town, then don't move there. Is there any possibility that there are groups of people that agree with this gentleman? Do you think the business proposition would have got off the ground if there was not support for it? Please check out a community in the Catskills New York of a different religion but of the same outlook.

From a business perspective, I would like to be the liquor store and pharmacy owner in the adjacent town. Reminds me of when my buddies were stationed in Kentucky while they were in the Army. Some counties were dry and just before you left a wet county, you were told in bright big letters "last chance to get booze." The same will apply and more to this venture.

So instead of being critical of the idea, capitalize on it. You can bet your bottom dollar that the folks within Catholictown will be found in those stores, especially the most righteous.

If you’re a trial lawyer, the entire concept is a goldmine waiting to be tilled.

The idea of a town operating above, aside or against civil rights is troubling, because Libertarian thinking only applies to individuals who can make choices, and not every individual can chose where they live. Catholic nuts (or born again or orthodox jew nuts) can move anywhere they like, but in America, children of these nuts have the same rights to access birth control (and abortion, gynecological health care, sex ed, etc.) as children anywhere else.

I do like the idea of carpetbagging liquor & porn to the fundies though...

i'm intrigued, appalled, amused, and flabbergasted...all at once!
